Wine is the result of cooperation between man and nature. It fulfils human needs that are broadly speaking considered to be nutritional but not primary. As such, wine has filled many pages of history: it has been contained in laws, and celebrated in poems.

History of Vinodol grapevine

Historical development of wine growing and winemaking has experienced various difficulties trough history as a result of specific geopolitical and economic turmoil. Vineyards in the Croatian region of Primorje date back to the time of the ancient Romans who recognized these areas as a fertile oasis for wine production. Among them is the Vinodol Valley, a literal translation of the Roman name "Vallis Vineari“. This name is even older because had already been mentioned in 340 BC by a Greek geographer Slilaks. The Croats converted this Latin two words name into a one-word name thus creating a well-known wine. They have continued with its production, and back in the days, it had important functions other than those given to it today. Besides being used as a refreshment, it was also used as a means of trade and was being exchanged for other items of food, goods and objects. One of the most important Croatian written documents coming from these areas –
The Vinodol Codex from 1288 mentions wine. The codex regulates guards in the vineyards; it mentions wine, taverns, and wine cellar, wine cellar worker, an economist and a waiter. Almost all the statutes of medieval towns of the coastal Croatia have rules that are still applicable today, such as the enjoyment of wine with the necessary sobriety or the ban on selling wine to drunkards. From the time of the French occupation in 1814, the report of the president of the Canton of Vinodol and the municipality of Novaljska was preserved about the hard life of the winegrowers. They fought with the wind bora carrying the sea salt into vineyards, struggled with the periods of severe draughts, planting grape vine on the steep karstic soil and guarding the fertile Vinodol Valley for crops. After centuries of successful production, difficult times came to Croatia's viticulture. At the end of the 19th century, Grape phylloxera destroyed the vineyards. The Vinodol Valley, which in 1905 counted 614 ha of processed vineyards, was almost destroyed.

Vineyard seeks a servant, and wine a master...

The revitalization of the Vinodol Valley began in 1994, with the arrival of war refugees from Vukovar headed by Andrija Biro and Miroslav Palinkaš. As winegrowers and winemakers by profession, they knew what this valley needed. The rich wine-growing and wine-growing tradition of the Vinodol Valley was accepted by Miroslav Palinkaš, whose family tradition of grape and wine production originates from Šarengrad (Srijemski vinjac), where he still owns 4 hectares of Graševina together with his brother and father. Today, the winery has 40 hectares of land, of which 31 hectares of vineyards. In the heart of the vineyard, a new wine cellar and a tasting room were created, where many visitors today enjoy a glass of wine. In twenty years of work, wines have been created which, according to professionals’ ratings, compete with the best wines in the world. Palinkaš pays special attention to the local autochthonous variety Žlahtina, which he has returned to Vinodol. The other types of wine like chardonnay, cabernet sauvignon, frankovka, pinot white, and muškat are also produced, some of which are top quality wines. We are also very proud of the production of our sparkling wines "1288" and "San Marino" which fall into the category of top sparkling wines. "San Marino" is the only top sparkling wine of the Žlahtina sort.
